Curfew and Passenger Violations
Getting your driver’s license is an exciting time for a teenager. But, in the state of Connecticut, there are driving restrictions that those under 18 need to comply with. If a 16 or 17 year old driver does not follow these laws, they face consequences. You can learn more about curfew and passenger violations here.
Learner’s Permit Restrictions
If a 16 or 17 year old has a learner’s permit, they need to obey certain restrictions. One such restriction is a passenger restriction. This restriction states that they can only operate a motor vehicle if one of the following is a passenger in the car:
- A parent
- A legal guardian
- Trained instructors
Those with learner’s permits who are not yet 18 do not have a curfew restriction. But, they need to drive with one of the above passengers in the car.
Driver’s License Restrictions
After obtaining a driver’s license, a 16 or 17 year old driver needs to follow these passenger requirements for the first six months after they get their license. They can’t have passengers in their vehicles with the exception of:
- Driving instructors
- A parent with a valid driver’s license
- A legal guardian with a valid driver’s license
- Someone who is over 20 years old and has had a license for at least four years. Note that this person cannot have a license suspension in the past four years.
For the second six months after getting their license, people at this age can add immediate family members to the list of acceptable passengers.
Until a driver turns 18, they also have curfew regulations. They can’t drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. You can drive at this age past the curfew if you are driving.
- To or from your job
- To or from religious activities
- For a medical emergency
- To or from school
If you are found in violation of these driving rules, you could face a license suspension or other penalties.
