Get to Know the Area

Woodbury, Connecticut

Woodbury rests in the Pomperaug River valley of southern Litchfield County, a town with one of the longest and most gracious main streets in New England. It was settled in 1659 as Pomperaug Plantation and named as the town of Woodbury in 1673, originally drawn from Stratford, before being transferred into the newly created Litchfield County in 1751. The Pomperaug River itself is born in town, where the Nonnewaug and Weekeepeemee Rivers join, and the broad valley made Woodbury a prosperous farming and trading center from its earliest days.

Two strands of history give Woodbury its character. The first is religious: in 1783, in the depths of the post-Revolutionary years, ten Episcopal clergymen gathered at the Glebe House in Woodbury and elected Samuel Seabury the first American Episcopal bishop — and the first bishop of Connecticut — a founding moment for the Episcopal Church in the United States. The Glebe House survives as a museum, alongside the Hurd House, anchoring one of the richest historic districts in the state.

The second strand is commerce of a particular kind: antiques. Over the late twentieth century, the historic houses along Woodbury’s Main Street filled with antique shops and dealers, and the town became known as the “Antiques Capital of Connecticut,” drawing collectors and browsers from across the region and beyond. That reputation, together with the town’s beautifully preserved colonial streetscape, makes Woodbury a destination as much as a place to live.

All those visitors travel the town’s main roads. U.S. Route 6 runs the length of Woodbury as Main Street, past the antique shops and historic houses, while Routes 47 and 64 branch off toward the surrounding towns. Because so many of the drivers here are visitors unfamiliar with the area, enforcement along these roads is steady, and citations are common. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
