Winchester sits in the high northwest corner of Litchfield County, a town that styles itself the “Gateway to the Berkshires,” and within its borders lies the compact mill city of Winsted, built where the Still and Mad Rivers meet. The town was settled in 1732 and incorporated in 1771, and Winsted — its name a blend of Winchester and neighboring Barkhamsted — grew up around the waterpower of the rivers, becoming the busy commercial and industrial heart of the town while the rest of Winchester stayed rural and hilly.

Industry made Winsted. As early as 1792, Benjamin Jenkins and James Boyd built one of the state’s first scythe factories here, and the rivers went on to power a range of mills. The town’s signature industry, though, was clocks: the Gilbert Clock Company, along the Still River, grew into one of the largest clock manufacturers in the world by the turn of the twentieth century, and Winsted’s name traveled the country on clock faces and dials. That prosperity left the city a remarkable stock of nineteenth-century architecture, much of it still lining Main Street.

Beyond the city, Winchester offers the lakes and woods of the northwest hills. Highland Lake, one of the larger lakes in the state, draws boaters and summer residents, and the surrounding state forest land makes the town a destination for outdoor recreation. The historic village of Winchester Center, with its green, preserves the older, rural face of the town away from the mills.

Winsted’s geography makes it a highway crossroads. Route 8 climbs the Naugatuck and Mad River valleys to reach its northern end at Winsted, meeting U.S. Route 44, which runs east and west across the hills, while Route 183 heads south. Where these routes converge in the city, traffic concentrates and enforcement is steady, and citations are common.
