Wethersfield lies on the Connecticut River just south of Hartford, and it wears its age proudly: founded in 1634 by a Puritan party long remembered as the “10 Men,” it lays claim to being the oldest town in Connecticut. That deep history is preserved in Old Wethersfield, the largest historic district in the state — roughly two square miles holding some eleven hundred buildings from the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, gathered around an ancient green and Main Street. Wethersfield grew as a busy river port, but a great flood in 1692 shifted the Connecticut’s channel to the east, cutting the harbor off and leaving behind the quiet body of water known as the Cove — once the heart of the town’s commerce, now a place of boathouses and recreation. Even after the port declined, the town thrived on agriculture, and by the 1730s it was famous for its red onions, shipped by the thousands of bushels down the river to the West Indies; “you could smell Wethersfield before you could see it,” the old saying went.

History was made in Wethersfield’s parlors as well. The Webb-Deane-Stevens houses on Main Street — the Joseph Webb House, the Silas Deane House, and their neighbors — preserve the homes of Revolutionary-era figures, and it was at the Webb House in 1781 that George Washington and the French commander Rochambeau planned the campaign that led to victory at Yorktown. Together with the Buttolph-Williams House, these landmarks make Wethersfield one of the most historically rich towns in the country.

For all its colonial character, Wethersfield is a busy suburb today, and its traffic rides modern roads. Interstate 91 runs along the town, and Route 99 — the Silas Deane Highway — and Route 3 carry heavy commuter and commercial traffic toward Hartford and the river towns.
