Get to Know the Area

Westport, Connecticut

Westport sits on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Saugatuck River, one of the most affluent and best-known towns on Connecticut’s Gold Coast. People have lived along this shore for thousands of years, and the area was home to Paugussett and Pootatuck groups before Fairfield’s “Bankside Farmers” received a land grant at Green Farms in 1648. The settlement grew along the river and the Post Road, and in 1835 it incorporated as Westport, taking its name from its role as a port.

That port made the town’s early fortune. In the nineteenth century Westport was a bustling shipping center and, improbably, the leading onion-growing town in the United States, sending produce out from the Saugatuck and Mill River wharves to markets as far away as Texas and the West Indies. As the farms and the shipping faded, a very different community took root: by the early twentieth century Westport had become a celebrated arts colony, drawing painters, writers, and actors who gave the town a creative, sophisticated character it has never lost.

Today Westport blends that heritage with the life of a prosperous shoreline suburb. Compo Beach, with its cannons commemorating a Revolutionary skirmish, and Sherwood Island State Park, one of the oldest state parks in Connecticut, anchor the town’s shorefront, while a lively downtown of shops and the Westport Country Playhouse keep its cultural reputation alive. It remains a town where the beach, the river, and the arts all shape daily life.

Like its Gold Coast neighbors, Westport runs on the commute. Interstate 95 and the Post Road run through town along the shore, the Merritt Parkway crosses the northern section, and Route 33 connects inland, while Metro-North carries commuters to New York from the Saugatuck and Greens Farms stations. These corridors fill with heavy daily traffic and see steady enforcement, with citations common along them. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
