Weston is one of the most determinedly rural towns in Fairfield County, an affluent residential community inland from the busy coast that has chosen, again and again, to stay green. The town was originally part of Fairfield and incorporated on its own in 1787. Where the Paugussett and other Native groups had once hunted, early European settlers turned to lumbering and charcoal-making, and the Aspetuck and Saugatuck Rivers powered forges and foundries that briefly made the villages of Lyon’s Plain and Valley Forge into small industrial centers. When that work moved to larger towns by the 1830s, farming returned, and Weston settled into the rural pattern it still follows.

Much of the town’s land is now permanently wild. Weston holds most of the Lucius Pond Ordway/Devil’s Den Preserve, a 1,746-acre nature reserve that is the largest protected tract in Fairfield County, drawing tens of thousands of hikers a year to its trails, while the Saugatuck Reservoir reaches along the town’s edge. Together they make Weston feel far more remote than its location, just a short drive from the Gold Coast cities, would suggest.

Even a town this quiet sees traffic on its two main roads. Route 57 and Route 53 run through the town center and carry commuters toward Westport, Norwalk, and the highways beyond, winding through the woods that define Weston.
