Get to Know the Area

Watertown, Connecticut

Watertown lies in southeastern Litchfield County, in the Central Naugatuck Valley just northwest of the city of Waterbury. The land was bought by a group of proprietors led by Thomas Judd in 1684, and the settlement grew first as the parish of Westbury, organized in 1738, before separating from Waterbury and incorporating as the town of Watertown in 1780. It has long lived in the orbit of its larger neighbor while keeping its own distinct identity — including the village of Oakville in its southeastern corner, which has its own post office and ZIP code but draws its services from Watertown.

For a town of its size, Watertown is well known for its school. The Taft School, founded by Horace Taft, has occupied its campus in the village center since the early twentieth century and draws boarding students from around the world, lending the town a prep-school character along its Main Street. Around the school, Watertown developed a diversified manufacturing base over the years — plastics, rayon, silk, nylon, mattresses, brass goods, electronics, and even watches — that carried it beyond the brass economy of the valley.

The town also holds a good deal of open space. Parts of Mattatuck State Forest and Black Rock State Park lie within Watertown, offering trails, ponds, and woodland that balance the developed center and the industrial edge near Waterbury. It is a town that mixes suburban neighborhoods, a historic center, and protected countryside.

Watertown’s traffic threads a familiar set of roads. U.S. Route 6 crosses the town east and west and Route 63 runs north and south, meeting near the center, while the Route 8 expressway runs along the eastern edge with two local exits. These roads carry steady commuter and through traffic between Waterbury, Litchfield, and beyond, and they see regular enforcement, with citations common along the busier stretches. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
