Washington is a quiet hill town of back roads and river valley, and a ticket on Route 47 or Route 199 is heard at Torrington Superior Court (GA18).
Washington occupies the wooded hills of western Litchfield County along the Shepaug River, a town whose roots run very deep — archaeological evidence places Native settlement along the river some ten thousand years ago, and the Wyantenock people lived here when the first colonists arrived. The town was incorporated in 1779 from pieces of Woodbury, Litchfield, Kent, and New Milford, and it holds a small distinction of national note: it is said to be the first town in the United States named for George Washington, who passed through the area during the Revolution.
The town center, Washington Depot, grew up later around the railroad along the Shepaug, where small mills once gave the spot the working name “Factory Hollow.” Today the Depot and the hilltop village of Washington Green form a town widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the state — so picturesque that it helped inspire the fictional setting of a well-known television series. The Mayflower Inn, a celebrated country inn and spa, sits among its hills, and the Steep Rock Association preserves more than two thousand acres of river valley and woodland for hiking and quiet recreation.
Washington has long been a town of learning and culture as well. The Frederick Gunn School, founded in 1850 as The Gunnery by the educator and abolitionist Frederick Gunn — often called the father of recreational camping — draws students from around the world, and the Institute for American Indian Studies preserves and presents the heritage of the region’s Native peoples, complete with a recreated Algonkian village on its grounds. That mix of deep history, education, and protected landscape defines the town.
For all its quiet, Washington’s roads carry steady traffic. Route 47 runs through the town and the Depot, Route 199 leads past the Gunn School, and Route 109 connects toward the neighboring towns. These country roads see periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the busier stretches and the river valley.
