Warren is one of the smallest and quietest towns in Connecticut, tucked into the western hills of Litchfield County in the foothills of the Berkshires, close to the New York line. First settled in 1737 as part of Kent, it separated and incorporated in 1786, taking the name of Joseph Warren, the patriot who fell at Bunker Hill. From the start it was a hill-country farming town, and it has stayed remarkably true to that character — to this day Warren has no traffic lights and no commercial center to speak of, having resisted the development that reshaped so much of the county.
A large part of Warren’s appeal lies along its water and in its hills. The town sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Waramaug, the second-largest natural lake in the state, whose beauty once supported a string of lakeside inns that hired out horses and carriages to families up from the city. Nearby, Steep Rock Preserve and the Wyantenock State Forest protect thousands of acres of woods and river valley, making Warren a haven for those seeking quiet and open country.
For so small a place, Warren has an outsized history in two areas. Like its neighbors, it took part in the iron industry that flourished in the northwest hills, and it became an early center of education — by 1810 the little town supported five private schools and an academy, turning out figures like the theologian Charles G. Finney, who went on to lead Oberlin College. The fact that the railroad never reached Warren is often credited with preserving the rural, historic landscape that survives today.
Even a town this quiet sees traffic worth watching on its roads. Route 45 runs north and south, connecting Warren toward Cornwall and New Preston, while Route 341 runs east and west toward Woodville and Kent. These country roads see periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the open stretches near the lake.
