Voluntown occupies the far northeastern corner of New London County, pressed against the Rhode Island line, and it may have the most literal name of any town in the state. After the Narragansett War, English veterans petitioned the colonial government for a plantation of their own, and in 1700 the volunteers of that conflict were granted six square miles of this forested country — “Volunteers’ Town,” soon shortened to Voluntown, incorporated in 1721. The land had long belonged to the Narragansett, Pequot, and Mohegan peoples, and it had seen the fighting of King Philip’s War a generation before the veterans arrived to settle it.
What strikes any visitor to Voluntown today is how much of it is forest. Roughly two-thirds of the town lies within Pachaug State Forest, the largest forest in the Connecticut state system, sprawling across more than twenty-seven thousand acres here and in the neighboring towns. Its ponds, trails, and rugged uplands — including the evocatively named Mount Misery and the shores of Beach Pond on the Rhode Island line — make Voluntown a destination for hikers, campers, and hunters, and they keep the town one of the least developed in the state.
Beyond the forest, Voluntown is a small, quiet rural community, with a modest village center and scattered homes among the woods and old farm fields. It has no industry or commercial strip to speak of, and its character is shaped almost entirely by the surrounding wilderness and its deep colonial roots.
Even so, real traffic moves through town on its state routes. Route 49, a designated scenic road, runs north and south, while Routes 138, 165, and 12 carry through traffic toward Norwich, the Rhode Island line, and the surrounding towns. These roads see periodic enforcement, and a citation on any of them can affect a driver’s license, insurance, and record.
