Union, Connecticut

Union is the smallest town in Connecticut by population — home to only around eight hundred people — tucked into the far northeastern corner of Tolland County against the Massachusetts line. The Nipmuck lived in these forested hills long before Presbyterian settlers from Massachusetts arrived in 1727, and the town was incorporated in 1734, later joining Tolland County in 1785. The rocky, upland terrain never supported much farming or industry, and Union has remained one of the quietest and least developed towns in the state for its entire history.

That very emptiness is now its greatest asset. Roughly a third of Union is protected state land, including Bigelow Hollow State Park and the Nipmuck State Forest — the second-oldest state forest in Connecticut — along with the Mountain Laurel Sanctuary. Together they form part of one of the largest unbroken stretches of forest in eastern Connecticut, drawing hikers, paddlers, and anglers to Bigelow Hollow’s ponds and the deep woods around them. For a town with almost no commercial center, Union offers an outsized share of wilderness.

The one modern feature that cuts through this quiet is the interstate. Interstate 84 climbs across Union on its way toward Massachusetts and reaches its highest elevation in the entire state here — just over a thousand feet — as it crosses the wooded high ground. Apart from the highway and a small cluster of buildings at the town center, Union is mostly forest, ponds, and back roads.

The town’s traffic, such as it is, concentrates on a few routes. Interstate 84 carries steady through traffic across the high country, and Routes 190 and 171 meet at the small town center, with Route 197 serving the southern edge. The interstate in particular sees regular enforcement, and citations turn up along it.
