Thompson occupies the very northeastern corner of Connecticut, a large, spread-out town that touches both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Named for Sir Robert Thompson, an English landholder who once held title to the area, it grew as a farming and mill region threaded by the French, Five Mile, and Quinebaug Rivers and dotted with ponds and lakes — among them West Thompson Lake and the Quaddick Reservoir. Down along the river is North Grosvenordale, a classic New England mill village whose great brick textile mill and tight rows of worker housing form their own historic district — the industrial counterpart to the genteel hilltop. Thompson also earned a grim footnote in railroad history as the site of the 1891 Great East Thompson Train Wreck, one of the few accidents ever to involve four trains.

In the modern era the town is known to many for speed. Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, built on farmland after the 1938 hurricane, is credited with the first purpose-built road course and the first paved high-banked oval in the country, and its races draw fans from across the Northeast. Between the speedway, the historic villages, and the surrounding lakes and forests, Thompson blends quiet rural character with a surprising variety of draws.

Because the town is so large and spread out, its traffic rides on a handful of routes. Interstate 395 runs north and south through Thompson toward Massachusetts, and Routes 12, 193, and 200 connect the villages and the speedway. These roads carry steady through traffic and see periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the busier stretches and near the interstate ramps.
