Thomaston sits in the Naugatuck Valley of southern Litchfield County, where the river meets the Northfield and Black Rock Brooks. For most of its early history it was simply Plymouth Hollow, the industrial lower section of the town of Plymouth, and its story is inseparable from one man: Seth Thomas, the clockmaker whose name the town took when it incorporated on its own in 1875. Thomas had established a clock factory in the hollow back in 1812, and over the following decades he built it into one of the most famous clockmaking enterprises in America.
The Seth Thomas Clock Company shaped everything about the town. Thomas pioneered the mass production of clocks, and to feed his factory he helped route the Naugatuck railroad through the hollow in 1849, which let him buy brass cheaply from the Waterbury mills and ship his clocks across the country. By 1872 the company was turning out the great tower clocks that would mark public buildings far and wide — including Thomaston’s own Town Hall of 1883, crowned with a Seth Thomas tower clock that still keeps time over the center of town.
That clockmaking prosperity left Thomaston a handsome small town. The 1884 Thomaston Opera House, built in the company’s heyday, still stands as a cultural center, hosting performances much as it has for well over a century, and the brick mills and Victorian commercial blocks along the river recall the era when the town’s name was stamped on clocks in parlors everywhere. Around the industrial core, the outlying parts of town remain green and rural.
The valley funnels Thomaston’s traffic onto its main roads. The Route 8 expressway runs along the Naugatuck through the eastern part of town with three exits, carrying commuters at highway speed, while U.S. Route 6, Route 109, and Route 254 handle local and through traffic. These roads see steady traffic and regular enforcement, and citations are common along them.
