Stratford sits on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Housatonic River, an old shoreline town in eastern Fairfield County bordered by Bridgeport, Trumbull, Shelton, and — across the river — Milford. It is one of the oldest towns in the state, settled by Puritans in 1639 under the Reverend Adam Blakeman and William Beardsley, who arrived with some thirty-five families from England. The settlement was first called Pequannock, then Cupheag, a Native word meaning “place of shelter,” before taking the name Stratford after the English town. For its first centuries it was a farming and shipbuilding community along the river and the Sound.
The twentieth century made Stratford a center of aviation. Igor Sikorsky, the inventor of the first practical American helicopter, established Sikorsky Aircraft here, and the company became one of the great names in rotorcraft — so much so that every Marine One, the helicopter that carries the President, has been built in Stratford since 1957. The plant and the adjacent Sikorsky Memorial Airport remain central to the town’s economy and identity, a point of real local pride.
Stratford has long had a cultural side as well. In 1955 the American Shakespeare Theatre opened on the banks of the Housatonic, drawing renowned actors to its stage for decades, and the shoreline neighborhood of Lordship — out near the airport and the mile-and-a-half sweep of Long Beach — gives the town a classic seaside character. Between its riverfront, its beaches, and its historic green, Stratford balances industry, history, and the shore.
That setting also places Stratford on some of the busiest roads in the state. Interstate 95 crosses the town and the Housatonic on its way along the coast, paralleled by the Post Road, while the Merritt Parkway sweeps across the north and Route 110 follows the river. These corridors carry enormous daily traffic and see constant enforcement, and citations are common along them.
