History runs deep here, too. In August 1814, during the War of 1812, a British naval squadron under Sir Thomas Hardy demanded the borough’s surrender and, refused, bombarded Stonington for three days; the townspeople held firm, and the cannons they fired in their defense are memorialized in Cannon Square at the heart of the borough. That blend of working waterfront, maritime heritage, and seaside beauty gives Stonington its enduring character.
All of those visitors travel the same roads. Interstate 95 and the Post Road, U.S. Route 1, cross the town, and Route 27 carries the heavy seasonal traffic down into Mystic and the seaport. Because so many of the drivers cited here are tourists and travelers unfamiliar with the area, enforcement on these corridors is steady, especially in summer.
