Sprague is a small town on the Shetucket River in eastern Connecticut’s New London County, made up of three distinct villages — Baltic, Hanover, and Versailles — strung along the river and its tributaries. European settlement began in the 1700s, with Hanover organized as an ecclesiastical society as early as 1761, but the town as such is a creation of the industrial age, incorporated in 1861 from parts of Lisbon and Franklin to govern the mill village that had grown up around the river.

That village, and the town, owe their existence to one man. William Sprague, a Rhode Island mill tycoon and governor whose textile empire spread across several states, bought land and flowage rights on the Shetucket in 1856 and began building a large cotton mill at Baltic. Completed after his death, the mill became the beating heart of a new community, drawing workers and their families to the brick housing and tight streets that still define Baltic today. The town took Sprague’s name, and the Baltic Historic District preserves the mill village much as it grew.

When the textile era faded, Sprague held onto its character as a quiet, working river town. Its well-preserved industrial architecture, its open spaces, and the Shetucket itself have earned it a place in The Last Green Valley, the 35-town National Heritage Corridor that protects the rural and historic landscape of eastern Connecticut. It remains a small, close-knit community where the mill, the river, and the three villages still set the rhythm of life.

The town’s traffic runs on a couple of state routes. Route 97 and Route 138 carry the main flow through the villages and toward Norwich, Windham, and the surrounding towns, with Route 207 adding a local connection. These roads see steady through traffic and periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the busier stretches.
