Get to Know the Area

Sherman, Connecticut

Sherman is the northernmost and least populated town in Fairfield County, a small rural community tucked into the state’s western edge against the New York line. For its first decades it was the northern reach of New Fairfield, separating to incorporate as its own town in 1802 and taking the name of Roger Sherman, the Connecticut statesman who signed all of the nation’s founding documents. Bordered by New Fairfield, New Milford, Kent, and the New York town of Pawling, Sherman has always been a place apart β€” quiet, hilly, and agricultural.

Farming and light milling sustained early Sherman, and by the nineteenth century the town had built a reputation for producing superior tobacco leaf, grown in the valleys and cured in the sheds that dotted the countryside. It never industrialized in any significant way, and that lack of factory development helped preserve the rural character that still defines it: a village center, working farms, and wooded hills, with one of the best-kept historic districts in the region clustered where its two main roads meet.

The great change to Sherman’s landscape came not from industry but from water. In the early twentieth century the creation of Candlewood Lake β€” the largest body of water in the state β€” flooded the southern portion of the town’s farmland, giving Sherman a long shoreline and a new identity as a lake community. Today the town blends that recreational waterfront with its enduring rural calm, a small place that residents and weekenders alike prize for its quiet.

The town’s traffic moves on just a few roads. Route 37 and Route 39 meet at the historic town center, and Route 55 heads west toward the New York line, carrying the commuter and seasonal traffic between Candlewood Lake, New Milford, and Danbury. These roads see periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the busier stretches near the lake and the village. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
