Get to Know the Area

Shelton, Connecticut

Shelton occupies the west bank of the Housatonic River in southern Fairfield County, directly across the water from Derby, with which it has always shared a valley and an industrial history. The area was settled in 1639 as part of Stratford and passed through a string of names — Coram, then Ripton — before incorporating in 1789 as Huntington. The riverside borough that grew around the falls took the name Shelton in 1882, honoring the industrialist Edward N. Shelton who promoted the dam, and the city was incorporated in 1915.

That dam was the making of industrial Shelton. When the Derby Dam — also called the Housatonic Dam — was completed at Shelton in 1870, it greatly increased the available water power, and factories rose along the river to make tacks, pins, textiles, and pianos. The riverfront filled with mills and the dense neighborhoods that served them, and Shelton became a busy manufacturing city. One dramatic chapter came in 1975, when the Sponge Rubber Products plant — once a B.F. Goodrich operation — was destroyed in a notorious arson explosion, an event that marked the decline of the old industrial era. The site has since been reborn as Riverwalk Park along the water.

Modern Shelton has reinvented itself around a very different kind of economy. The Bridgeport Avenue corridor on the city’s higher ground has grown into one of the region’s major concentrations of corporate offices and business parks, drawing employers and commuters from across the area, while the historic Huntington green and the older neighborhoods preserve the city’s earlier character. The result is a city that spans a riverside industrial past and a hilltop corporate present.

That mix puts heavy traffic on Shelton’s roads. Route 8 runs along the river with several exits feeding the Bridgeport Avenue business district, and Routes 110 and 108 carry local traffic through the city and the Huntington section. These corridors fill at rush hour and see steady enforcement, with citations common along them. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
