Sharon sits in the far northwest corner of Connecticut, a town bounded on the west by New York and on the east by the Housatonic River, deep in the rolling hill country of upper Litchfield County. The General Assembly incorporated it in 1739 and gave it the name of the biblical Plain of Sharon, a fertile region, and the proprietors laid out a broad village green that survives today much as it was first planned — one of the loveliest in the state, lined with stately homes and presided over by the Sharon Clock Tower across from Town Hall.
Like its neighbors in the northwest corner, Sharon was built in part on iron. The ore beneath these hills fed early forges, and town residents like Asahel Hotchkiss turned local iron into rakes, buckles, currycombs, and other everyday goods in the early nineteenth century. The Hotchkiss name carried into the Civil War, when the town manufactured munitions and gave its name to the Hotchkiss explosive shell — a reminder that even quiet hill towns played a part in the nation’s industrial and military history.
Today Sharon is an affluent, rural town prized for its scenery and its quiet. The Sharon Audubon Center draws naturalists to its trails and sanctuary, Housatonic Meadows State Park runs along the river in the eastern part of town, and the green, the historic homes, and the surrounding farms and forests give Sharon the character of a classic New England country town that has changed little in generations.
For all that calm, Sharon’s roads carry steady traffic. Route 4 and Route 41 run through the town and the green, Route 343 heads west toward Amenia, New York, and Route 361 leads toward Millerton. These country roads see periodic enforcement, and a citation on any of them can affect a driver’s license, insurance, and record.
