Seymour lies along the Naugatuck River in the lower part of the valley that gives the river its name, in southern New Haven County. The area was settled around 1678 as part of Derby, on land the Native people called Naugatuck, and the falls of the river here — a natural source of water power — would shape the town’s whole history. Seymour has worn more names than almost any town in the state: it was Rimmon, then Chusetown for the Pequot chief Joseph Mauwehu known as “Chuse,” then Humphreysville, before it incorporated in 1850 and took the name of Governor Thomas H. Seymour.

The Humphreysville name points to the man who made the town an industrial pioneer. General David Humphreys — Revolutionary officer, aide to Washington, and U.S. diplomat — built a mill at the falls in 1804 and there produced the first domestically manufactured woolen cloth in the United States, even importing Merino sheep from Spain to improve American flocks. Around his mill he laid out a “model village” for his workers, an early experiment in industrial planning. The water power he harnessed drew other industries, and Seymour became a busy manufacturing town.

That tradition carried on through the nineteenth century and beyond. The brick Tingue Mill, built in 1856 as a paper mill, became under the Tingue family the nation’s leading maker of “plush,” the dense woven fabric, by the turn of the twentieth century. Like its neighbors up and down the Naugatuck, Seymour grew dense and industrious along the river, and though the great mills have largely closed, the town keeps a compact, working-valley character around its falls and old factory blocks.

Seymour’s geography funnels its traffic onto the valley’s main road. Route 8, the expressway that runs the length of the Naugatuck Valley, carries the bulk of through traffic at highway speeds, while Routes 67 and 313 handle local movement and the connections to neighboring towns. These corridors see steady traffic and regular enforcement, and citations are common along them.
