Scotland is among the smallest and youngest of the Windham County towns, a tiny rural community in the hilly farm country of eastern Connecticut’s Quiet Corner. It owes its name to Isaac Magune, who around 1700 bought several hundred acres of this rough terrain in what was then part of Windham and named it for his native land. By 1726 some eighty families — English Puritan, Scottish, and Huguenot in descent — had settled the hills, and the community grew slowly into a parish and, much later, a town in its own right. The Little River traces the eastern edge of town, and the landscape of farms, stone walls, and woodlots has changed remarkably little.

For so small a place, Scotland gave the nation a figure of real importance. Samuel Huntington was born here in 1731, and his career carried him to the very center of the founding: he signed the Declaration of Independence, served as President of the Continental Congress, and went on to be Governor of Connecticut. The Samuel Huntington Homestead, the family farmhouse where he grew up, still stands and is preserved as a National Historic Landmark — a touchstone of which this small town is justly proud. Scotland also produced Daniel Waldo, a long-serving chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Beyond those distinctions, Scotland remains a deeply rural town with no real commercial center to speak of — fields and forest, a village green, and quiet roads winding between old farms. It is the kind of community where the past sits close to the surface and the pace of life stays slow.

Even so, real traffic moves through town. Route 14 runs east and west across the Quiet Corner, and Route 97 runs north and south, carrying commuters and through travelers between Windham, Canterbury, and the towns beyond. These open roads see periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the faster stretches.
