Salisbury occupies the very northwest corner of Connecticut, a town of rolling hills, pristine lakes, and mountain scenery that ranks among the most beautiful in the state. Incorporated in 1741, it is really a collection of villages — Lakeville, Lime Rock, Taconic, and Salisbury itself — set among the Berkshire foothills near the New York and Massachusetts lines. That ore made the town. Ore Hill Mine opened in Lakeville as early as 1731, forges and furnaces rose along the streams, and in 1762 the first blast furnace — built by partners including the young Ethan Allen and the ironmaster Samuel Forbes — went into blast at the outlet of Lake Wononscopomuc. During the Revolution the Salisbury Furnace cast cannon and shot for the American cause, earning the town the proud name “Arsenal of the Revolution,” and Salisbury iron went on to make everything from railroad-car wheels to fine tools well into the nineteenth century.
When the furnaces cooled, Salisbury became a town of education and recreation. The Hotchkiss School, founded in Lakeville in 1891, draws students from around the world to its lakeside campus, and the surrounding countryside — Twin Lakes, the Appalachian Trail along the ridges, and Lime Rock Park, the celebrated road-racing circuit tucked into the Lime Rock valley — pulls a steady stream of visitors through the seasons. The result is a quiet rural town that nonetheless sees a remarkable variety of people pass through.
Those visitors travel a handful of country roads. U.S. Route 44 and Route 41 meet in Lakeville at the heart of the town, and Route 112 runs down to Lime Rock Park, filling on race weekends. Many of the drivers cited on these roads are out-of-towners — hikers, parents, and race fans unfamiliar with the area — and enforcement is steady.
