Roxbury is one of the small, quiet towns of the Litchfield Hills, set in the southwestern corner of the county along the Shepaug River — whose name, meaning “rocky water,” the town itself once carried. Europeans settled the area in 1713 as part of Woodbury, and it incorporated as Roxbury in 1796. For most of its history it has been a rural community of farms, woods, and rolling hills, the kind of place where the landscape has changed little over the generations.

Beneath that pastoral surface, though, Roxbury once held an industry. At Mine Hill, residents found iron ore and granite, and through the nineteenth century they worked them in earnest: a smelting furnace and a quarry operated on the hill, and when the Shepaug Spathic Iron and Steel Company expanded the mine in 1865, it built up an entire industrial enclave called Chalybes, drawing hundreds of immigrant workers — Polish, Irish, Swedish, German, and Italian — to this remote corner of Litchfield County. The venture eventually failed, and Mine Hill is now a preserve of the Roxbury Land Trust, its furnace ruins and mine openings hidden among hiking trails above the river.

In the twentieth century Roxbury became something else again: a refuge for writers, artists, and performers drawn to its beauty and quiet. The playwright Arthur Miller lived and worked here for nearly half a century, and the town’s roster of residents over the years has included the sculptor Alexander Calder, the authors William Styron and Frank McCourt, and the composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, among others. That artistic legacy, paired with its rural calm, gives Roxbury a quiet distinction out of proportion to its small size.

Even a town this small sees traffic worth watching on its roads. Route 67 runs through Roxbury as the main route toward New Milford and Southbury, while Route 199 heads to Washington and Route 317 to Woodbury.
