Rocky Hill rises from the west bank of the Connecticut River just south of Hartford, a town named for the trap rock ridge that lifts its northeastern corner. The Wangunk people lived along the river here before Europeans began settling in 1650, and for nearly two centuries the area was Stepney Parish, part of Wethersfield, before incorporating as the town of Rocky Hill in 1843. When the Connecticut River shifted its course around 1700, Rocky Hill found itself with a natural landing, and it grew into a busy maritime center.
For a stretch of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the riverfront hummed with commerce. Rocky Hill was a thriving port from about 1750 to 1820, with five shipyards lining the water and vessels carrying the produce and goods of the valley down the river and out to sea. A living relic of that river era still operates: the Rocky Hill–Glastonbury Ferry, which has carried passengers across the Connecticut since 1655 and ranks among the oldest continuously operating ferries in the nation, crossing on a small barge each season as it has for centuries.
Rocky Hill’s most surprising attraction lies underground — or rather, underfoot. In 1966, a construction crew excavating for Interstate 91 uncovered a vast bed of dinosaur tracks, so significant that the highway was rerouted to preserve them. The site became Dinosaur State Park, one of the largest dinosaur track sites in North America, where a great geodesic dome shelters the fossil trackway and draws visitors and school groups from across the region. Today Rocky Hill is a settled suburb that blends that deep history with offices, neighborhoods, and its riverside parks.
Its location on the river corridor puts heavy traffic on its roads. Interstate 91 runs the length of the town, carrying commuters between Hartford and the shoreline, while Route 3 and Route 99 handle local traffic and Route 160 leads down to the ferry. The I-91 corridor in particular stays busy and is steadily enforced, and citations are common along it.
