Redding is a rural, heavily wooded town in the hills of southwestern Fairfield County, a place that has guarded its open space and quiet character even as the region around it filled in. It was set off from Fairfield in 1767, taking the name “Reading” after the early proprietor John Read before the spelling settled into Redding in 1844. For most of its history it was a farming community, supplemented by quarrying and, in the Georgetown section, the production of wire screen, but it never industrialized in any large way.
Redding’s place in history was secured during the Revolution. In the winter of 1778–79, General Israel Putnam quartered three brigades of the Continental Army here, in an encampment so cold and difficult that it became known as “Connecticut’s Valley Forge.” The site is now Putnam Memorial State Park, where stone chimney mounds and a museum preserve the memory of that hard winter — one of the oldest state parks in Connecticut and a touchstone of the town’s identity.
The town has long drawn writers and artists to its rural calm, none more famous than Mark Twain. In 1908 the author built his last home, Stormfield, in the Redding hills, and lived there until his death in 1910; the community library he helped found still bears his name. The town’s regional high school, meanwhile, honors another literary figure with local ties, the poet and statesman Joel Barlow. That blend of Revolutionary history, literary heritage, and protected woodland gives Redding an unusually rich character for so small a town.

Routes 53, 107, and 58 wind through Redding’s hills, meeting near Putnam Park, while Route 7 runs along the Georgetown edge toward Danbury and Norwalk.
