Preston lies just east of Norwich in New London County, a rural town that has kept much of the character it has carried since the seventeenth century. The land was granted in 1686 to Thomas Parke, Thomas Tracy, and their associates, and Owaneco, the son of the Mohegan sachem Uncas, confirmed the deed in 1687 — the same year the town was incorporated and named for Preston in Lancashire. Its first English settler, Jonathan Brewster, had already taken up land at the mouth of Poquetanuck Cove on the Thames, on the neck of land that still bears his family’s name.

Like many old Connecticut towns, Preston is really a collection of villages. Preston City and Poquetanuck developed as its main centers, and Long Society — annexed from Norwich in 1786 — added another, each with its own meetinghouse and cluster of early homes. Those village cores are remarkably well preserved: the Preston City Historic District, the Long Society Meeting House, and other sites carry the town’s colonial fabric onto the National Register of Historic Places. Early Preston made its living from shoemaking, metalsmithing, shipbuilding, and brickmaking, modest trades that supplemented the farms spread across its hills.

Today Preston remains one of the quieter, more rural towns in its corner of the state, a landscape of farmland, woods, and historic villages near the Thames. It sits close to the activity of Norwich and the casinos to the south and west, yet it has held onto an old-fashioned country character that residents value.

The town’s traffic runs on a handful of state routes. Route 2 and Route 12 carry the main flow toward Norwich and the highways, while Route 164 connects the inland villages and Route 2A skirts the southern edge. These roads see steady through traffic and periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the busier stretches.
