Get to Know the Area

Portland, Connecticut

Portland sits on the east bank of the Connecticut River, wrapped by the great curve of the water that gave the place its oldest name. The Wangunk people, who lived here for thousands of years, called it for the “big bend” of the river, and that bend has shaped the town’s life ever since. Across the water lies Middletown, to which Portland has always been closely tied β€” close enough that the two are joined today by one of the most graceful bridges in the state.

Portland’s fame rests on stone. The Portland Brownstone Quarries, where digging began as early as 1690, produced the rich reddish-brown sandstone that became one of the signature building materials of nineteenth-century America. At the industry’s height more than fifteen hundred workers cut and hauled stone here, loading it onto ships that carried it to build the rowhouses and landmarks of New York, Boston, Hartford, and cities across the country. The quarries shaped the whole town, drawing immigrant labor and spawning the shipyards, mills, and shops that served them β€” until the flood of 1936 and the hurricane of 1938 filled the great pits with water and brought the brownstone era to an end.

Stone was not the town’s only trade. Like many Connecticut River towns, Portland built ships, launching its first vessel in 1741, and the Gildersleeve family made the town a shipbuilding center for generations, with the economic heart of Portland shifting toward the Gildersleeve area by the mid-1800s. Today the old quarries have become a recreation area, and Portland is a residential town that wears its industrial heritage in its brownstone houses and riverfront.

The town’s traffic centers on the river crossing. The Arrigoni Bridge carries Routes 17 and 66 over the Connecticut to Middletown, and those routes, along with Route 17A, handle the bulk of local traffic. A ticket on any of them can affect a driver’s license, insurance, and record. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
