Pomfret is one of the loveliest of the Quiet Corner towns, a rural community in the hills of northeastern Windham County. Its English settlers bought the land in 1686 in a transaction remembered as the Mashamoquet Purchase, and the town was incorporated in 1713, taking the name of Pontefract in Yorkshire — softened over time, in the local pronunciation, to “Pomfret.” For three centuries it has remained a town of farms, woods, stone walls, and gracious country houses, with no real industrial chapter to change its character.
What distinguishes Pomfret is its long association with education and the outdoors. Two private schools give the town an unusual prominence: the Pomfret School, founded in 1894 across from the Congregational Church and built in part to designs by the architect Ernest Flagg, and the Rectory School, founded in 1920. Their handsome campuses, set among the rolling fields, have made Pomfret something of a school town in the New England prep tradition, drawing students and families from well beyond the region.
The countryside itself is Pomfret’s other great asset. Mashamoquet Brook State Park and Wolf Den State Park preserve large tracts of forest and stream — the latter home to the famous den where, by legend, the Revolutionary general Israel Putnam crawled in to kill a marauding wolf — while the Air Line Trail offers miles of walking and cycling along an old railroad bed. Together with the scenic farm country along Route 169, these lands make Pomfret a destination for those seeking the quiet, unspoiled landscape that gives the corner its name.
Even so, real traffic moves through town. U.S. Route 44 runs east and west across northern Connecticut, the scenic Route 169 — one of the most admired country roads in the state — runs north and south, and Route 101 crosses as well. These roads carry steady through traffic and see periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the open stretches.
