Plymouth sits in the eastern corner of Litchfield County, a town that helped give the world an industry. Incorporated in 1795, it became one of the great centers of American clockmaking, thanks above all to Eli Terry, who started his clock business here in 1792 and pioneered methods of mass-producing clocks that would make Connecticut synonymous with timekeeping. The story continued in the village of Terryville, named for Eli Terry Jr., who carried the family name east and harnessed the Pequabuck River for manufacturing. Clocks came first, but beginning in 1830 the village turned to locks, and the Eagle Lock Company grew into a world-renowned maker that at its height employed some eighteen hundred people. That heritage is preserved today at the Lock Museum of America, founded in Terryville in 1971, which holds the largest collection of early American locks in the country — more than twenty thousand pieces in all.

Around those industrial villages, Plymouth has remained a modest, hilly town in the central part of the state, a community of old factory neighborhoods, the village of Pequabuck, and the wooded ridges that separate it from Bristol and the Naugatuck Valley.
