Plainville is a compact town in central Hartford County, tucked between the cities of New Britain and Bristol about fourteen miles southwest of Hartford. Its name tells its origin: this was the “Great Plain” of Farmington, a stretch of unusually flat land that was settled around 1657 as part of that larger town. The plain remained a farming district for generations, and Plainville did not separate to incorporate as its own town until 1869, relatively late among Connecticut communities.
What changed Plainville’s fortunes was a canal. When the Farmington Canal opened in 1828, running through the Great Plain on its way from New Haven to Northampton, Massachusetts, it brought commerce and industry to the flatland, and an early business district grew up around the waterway. The canal itself was short-lived, but the development it sparked endured, and the town’s manufacturing base grew through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Today the old canal route survives in a far gentler form, as part of the popular greenway and rail-trail that draws walkers and cyclists through town.
For a small town, Plainville has a strong sense of community and a signature celebration: the Plainville Hot Air Balloon Festival, held each August at Norton Park, when balloons rise over the plain and the town gathers for music, games, and fireworks. That festival, along with its compact downtown and tidy neighborhoods, gives Plainville the feel of a close-knit small town surrounded by larger industrial neighbors.
Its central location, though, makes Plainville a crossroads. Route 10 runs north and south through the heart of town and the Route 72 expressway cuts across it, with Routes 177 and 372 feeding in as well. Where these roads converge in the small town center, traffic bunches and enforcement is steady, and citations are common around the interchanges and busy intersections.
