Get to Know the Area

Orange, Connecticut

Orange occupies a stretch of New Haven County between Milford, West Haven, and the lower Naugatuck Valley, an inland town just back from the shoreline. The Paugusset lived here before English colonists arrived, and for its early history the area was simply the northern and eastern district of Milford. By 1822 it had grown enough that residents formed their own town, naming it Orange for King William III, the Prince of Orange. A century later, in 1921, the southeastern portion split off in turn to become the city of West Haven, leaving Orange with its present shape.

Through most of its history Orange remained a town of farms and small mills, and it has kept a green, residential character around its historic town green even as the region built up around it. Today it is best known to many for an unexpected reason: it is the North American home of PEZ, the candy company that set up its headquarters and factory here in the 1970s and opened a visitor center in 2011 that draws fans of the iconic dispensers from far and wide.

Orange has also become a center of research and commerce. Yale’s West Campus, a 136-acre complex on the Orange–West Haven line that the university acquired from the pharmaceutical company Bayer, brings laboratories and academic activity to the town’s edge, while the Post Road corridor has filled with the shopping centers, restaurants, and offices that serve the surrounding suburbs. The result is a town that blends a quiet colonial center with a busy commercial frontage.

That commercial activity concentrates traffic on a few key roads. The Post Road, U.S. Route 1, carries one of the area’s busy retail strips through town, the Derby Turnpike, Route 34, heads up toward the valley, and Interstate 95 connects at its Orange exit. These corridors see heavy daily traffic and steady enforcement, and citations are common along them. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
