Old Saybrook stands where the Connecticut River finally reaches the sea, occupying the western point at the river’s mouth on Long Island Sound. It is one of the oldest English settlements in the state: the Saybrook Colony was established here in 1635, with the younger John Winthrop as its governor, on land claimed through a deed from the Earl of Warwick. That early colony placed Old Saybrook at the very beginning of Connecticut’s recorded history, guarding the strategic entrance to the river that would carry settlement and trade deep into the interior.
The town holds another founding distinction. In 1701 the Collegiate School of Connecticut was chartered in Saybrook — the institution that, after moving up the shore to New Haven in 1716, would become Yale University. For a small shoreline town to count both an early colony and the cradle of Yale among its origins is a remarkable inheritance, and Old Saybrook wears its history visibly along its old Main Street and Town Green.
In more recent times the town has been known for its shoreline and its most famous resident. The borough of Fenwick, a quiet enclave out toward the lighthouse, was the lifelong summer home of the actress Katharine Hepburn, and the town’s restored downtown theater, “The Kate,” carries her name and keeps her memory at the center of its cultural life. Beaches, marinas, and a walkable village center make Old Saybrook a classic Connecticut shore town, busy with visitors through the summer and settled and historic the rest of the year.
That shoreline setting puts the town on well-traveled roads. Interstate 95 and Route 9 meet just inland, funneling traffic toward the shore, while the Post Road, U.S. Route 1, runs through the commercial center and the scenic Route 154 loops along the coast past Fenwick. These roads carry heavy seasonal and through traffic and see steady enforcement, with citations common along them.
