Old Lyme rests at the mouth of the Connecticut River, where the broad waterway meets Long Island Sound, its western edge along the river and its southern shore on the Sound. The town began as part of Saybrook and separated in 1665 in a split so amicable that tradition remembers it as the “Loving Parting.” For two centuries it was a shoreline town of sea captains and farmers, its elm-shaded Lyme Street lined with the gracious houses of a prosperous river port — but its lasting fame would come from art rather than commerce.

In 1899 Florence Griswold opened her family’s 1817 mansion on Lyme Street to a group of painters, and Old Lyme became the home of one of the most important art colonies in America. The Tonalist painter Henry Ward Ranger first gathered his friends at Miss Florence’s boarding house, and when the Impressionist Childe Hassam arrived in 1903, the colony’s style turned toward the bright, broken light of Impressionism. For decades the artists painted the marshes, the river, and the village itself, and Old Lyme earned the nickname the “American Giverny.” Many of them left their mark literally on the house, painting panels onto its walls and doors — more than forty of which survive in what is now the Florence Griswold Museum, a National Historic Landmark.

That artistic legacy still defines the town. Galleries, the Lyme Academy, and the museum keep Old Lyme a center for the arts, while its beaches along the Sound and its setting on the river draw summer visitors and second-home owners. The result is a town that balances a quiet, historic village with a steady seasonal flow of people drawn to its art and its shore.

Those visitors travel the same roads. Interstate 95 and the Post Road, U.S. Route 1, cross the northern part of town, while Route 156 winds south along the shore toward the beaches. Many of the drivers cited on these roads are travelers and day-trippers unfamiliar with the area, and enforcement is steady, particularly in season.
