Norwalk sits on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Norwalk River, one of the larger cities on Connecticut’s Gold Coast and one of its oldest, taking its name from the Norwalke, a band of the Siwanoy who lived along the shore. Roger Ludlow and Daniel Patrick purchased the land in 1640, settlers arrived from Hartford in 1649, and the town was incorporated in 1651. From the beginning the sea was central to Norwalk’s life, and for a long stretch of its history one shellfish defined it.

Norwalk was “Oyster Town.” The shallow, fertile waters off its harbor made it one of the great oystering centers of the country, and by 1880 the city boasted the largest fleet of steam-powered oyster boats in the world, shipping Norwalk oysters far and wide. The industry peaked around the turn of the twentieth century, and though it shrank, it never disappeared — the city still celebrates its shellfishing heritage each year at the Norwalk Oyster Festival on the harbor.

The city is a patchwork of distinct neighborhoods, none more revived than South Norwalk, or SoNo. Once a gritty district of hat factories and waterfront industry, SoNo was reinvented beginning in the 1970s into a lively quarter of restaurants, galleries, and shops, anchored by the Maritime Aquarium that opened on the river in 1988. Around it spread the rest of Norwalk — the historic harbor, the seaside village of Rowayton, and the busy commercial corridors inland — making for a varied small city that is part shoreline town, part urban center.

That mix puts heavy traffic on some of the busiest roads in Connecticut. Interstate 95 runs the length of the city along the shore, paralleled by the Post Road, while Route 7 heads north up the river valley and the Merritt Parkway crosses the northern end. Norwalk’s stretch of I-95 in particular is among the most congested and heavily enforced in the state, and citations are common along these corridors.
