North Canaan anchors the far northwest corner of Connecticut, a town pressed against the Massachusetts line where two of the region’s major highways — U.S. Route 7 and U.S. Route 44 — cross. Settlement began in 1738, and for more than a century the area was part of the town of Canaan; the northern section finally separated and incorporated as North Canaan in 1858. At its heart is the village of Canaan, a busy little commercial center that grew up around a crossroads — first of roads, and then, decisively, of railroads.
The railroad made the village. When the Housatonic Railroad first steamed into town in 1841, it brought trade and travelers, and the arrival of the east–west Connecticut Western line in 1871 turned Canaan into a true junction. To serve that crossing, the Canaan Union Depot was built in 1872, a handsome wooden station that held the distinction of being the oldest union depot in continuous use in the country until a fire badly damaged it in 2001. The railroad heritage still defines the village center and its lively business district.
North Canaan’s hills hold another resource that shaped its fortunes: stone. Extensive deposits of limestone and marble, laid down by an ancient sea, have been quarried here for well over a century, burned for lime and cut for building stone. The marble from the town’s Allyndale quarries was used in the Connecticut State Capitol, completed in 1879 — a piece of North Canaan built into the seat of state government in Hartford.
The town’s traffic still follows those old crossroads. U.S. Route 7 runs north and south through the Housatonic Valley and U.S. Route 44 runs east and west across the northern hills, meeting in the village center. These highways carry steady through traffic between Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York, and they see regular enforcement, with citations common near the junction.
