Newington is an older residential suburb in the heart of Hartford County, lying about eight miles south of the capital. Its roots run nearly as deep as any town in the state: settlers from Wethersfield pushed west into the meadows here as early as 1636, and in 1721 those western farmers won the right to call their parish “Newington,” meaning the new town in the meadow. Yet full independence came slowly — Newington did not incorporate as a separate town until 1871, after a century and a half as a part of its riverside parent.

The road that shaped modern Newington is the Berlin Turnpike. Chartered in the late 1700s as the Hartford and New Haven Turnpike, it divided the town’s farmland from its growing commercial center, and when it was renamed the Berlin Turnpike and widened dramatically in 1942, it became one of the busiest commercial strips in central Connecticut — a corridor of motels, diners, and shops that still defines the town’s eastern flank. Above it rises Cedar Mountain, the traprock ridge that early in the twentieth century drew hospitals to its slopes, including the institution that became Newington Children’s Hospital.

For all its commercial bustle, Newington keeps a strong sense of community and a few distinctive points of pride. Mill Pond Falls, a small waterfall near the town center, is celebrated each autumn at the town’s Waterfall Festival, and Newington is the national home of the American Radio Relay League, the organization for amateur radio operators across the country. The result is a settled, family-oriented suburb that mixes neighborhoods, parks, and a major retail corridor.

That corridor is where the town’s traffic concentrates. The Berlin Turnpike, carrying U.S. Route 5 and Route 15, runs the length of eastern Newington as a high-volume commercial highway, while Route 175 (Cedar Street) and Route 176 carry local traffic through the residential town.
