It is also a city of culture and memory: the playwright Eugene O’Neill grew up here, and his boyhood home, Monte Cristo Cottage, where he set some of his greatest plays, is preserved as a museum.
All of that movement concentrates on a small, busy road network. Interstate 95 crosses the Thames into the city on the towering Gold Star Bridge, Route 32 runs north along the river toward Norwich, and local roads funnel traffic to the ferry terminals.
