New Hartford sits in the eastern reaches of Litchfield County, in the valley where the Farmington River winds down out of the northwest hills. The town owes its origins to the colonial “Western Lands” — the unsettled country that the General Assembly granted to the proprietors of Hartford and Windsor in the early eighteenth century. New Hartford was parceled out to 182 Hartford taxpayers, who began settling Town Hill and West Hill around 1733, completed a meetinghouse by 1749, and incorporated the town in 1738. Farming was the first occupation, but the rivers soon turned the wheels of grist and saw mills.
Water shaped the town’s industrial chapter. At Pine Meadow, where Roger Sheldon dammed the West Branch of the Farmington River in 1806, a compact mill village grew up around the falling water — a rural industrial settlement so well preserved that it survives today as a historic district, its workers’ houses and mill buildings recalling the era when small New England villages manufactured everything from tools to textiles along their streams.
That same river is now New Hartford’s great recreational asset. The stretch known as Satan’s Kingdom, where the Farmington narrows and quickens, draws anglers, kayakers, and summer crowds who float the river on inner tubes through the wooded gorge. Between the river, the surrounding state forest, and a traditional town center, New Hartford has kept the character of a Litchfield-hills town while remaining within reach of the Hartford area.
The town’s traffic follows the valley. Route 44, which runs through the center as Main Street, is the main east–west route between the Farmington Valley and the northwest corner, carrying steady commuter and recreational traffic, while Route 219 connects toward the south. These roads see regular enforcement, with citations common along the busier stretches and near the river crossings.
