Get to Know the Area

New Fairfield, Connecticut

New Fairfield occupies the northern edge of Fairfield County, a town pressed against the New York line on one side and against the broad waters of Candlewood Lake on the other. Its roots reach back to the 1720s, when settlers from Fairfield negotiated for the land with the Schaghticoke and their sachem, Chief Squantz โ€” whose name still marks Squantz Pond at the town’s edge. The deed was finally signed in 1729, the town was incorporated in 1740, and for its first century New Fairfield was a quiet community of farms and small enterprises. In 1802 the western part split off to become the separate town of Sherman, the combined territory having grown too large for residents to reach the meetinghouse.

The event that defined modern New Fairfield came in the late 1920s, and it was entirely man-made. Connecticut Light & Power dammed and flooded the Big Basin and surrounding lowlands to create Candlewood Lake, a vast reservoir for hydroelectric generation that filled in a matter of months in 1928. Overnight, a rural timber-and-farm town found itself on the shore of the largest lake in Connecticut, and over the following decades it transformed into a sought-after residential and resort community.

That lake now defines daily life. Candlewood’s coves and shoreline are lined with homes, docks, and beaches, and Squantz Pond State Park draws swimmers, boaters, and hikers from across the region. Away from the water, New Fairfield keeps a wooded, small-town character, its hills rising toward the New York border, but the rhythm of the town โ€” especially in summer โ€” follows the lake.

The town’s traffic moves on just two main roads. Route 37 and Route 39 carry residents and visitors through the town center and around the lake, connecting New Fairfield to Danbury to the south and Sherman to the north. These roads see steady seasonal and commuter traffic and regular enforcement, with citations common along the busier stretches near the lake. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
