Middletown sits at the very center of Connecticut, on the west bank of the Connecticut River where the waterway makes its great bend toward the sea. It was incorporated in 1650 under the Native name Mattabeseck and renamed Middletown three years later for its position midway between Hartford and the river’s mouth at Saybrook. That central, navigable location made the town’s fortune: by 1750 Middletown was the most populous and one of the wealthiest towns in all of Connecticut, its wharves crowded with ships carrying the produce of the river valley down to the Atlantic coast and the West Indies.

When the river trade gave way to industry and then to other commerce, Middletown reinvented itself more than once, but two institutions have anchored it through the changes. One is its long role as the seat of Middlesex County, established in 1785 and home to the courthouse that still serves the region. The other is Wesleyan University, founded in 1831 as a Methodist college and grown into one of the most respected liberal-arts universities in the country. Wesleyan’s hilltop campus and its students give the city much of its present character, and the broad Main Street below — one of the widest and liveliest downtowns in the state — functions as a college town of restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

The river that built Middletown still defines its edge, crossed by the graceful Arrigoni Bridge, the great 1938 truss-and-arch span — among the largest bridges in Connecticut — that links Middletown’s Main Street to Portland on the far bank. The riverfront, the historic downtown, and the university together make Middletown a small city with an outsized cultural life.

Its road network reflects that activity. Route 9 runs north and south through the city as a freeway, but its short downtown stretch is famous for the at-grade traffic signals that interrupt it, while Routes 66 and 17 climb over the Arrigoni Bridge and out toward the eastern towns. These corridors carry heavy traffic and see steady enforcement, and citations are common along them.
