Middlefield is a small town in Middlesex County whose very name reflects its geography — it sits roughly in the middle, between Middletown and Durham on one axis and Middletown and Meriden on another. The area was settled in the late seventeenth century by some of the region’s earliest colonists, and the Old North Burying Ground recorded its first burial in 1738, but for most of its early life Middlefield was the western farming district of Middletown. It did not become a town in its own right until 1866.
No family is more woven into Middlefield’s story than the Lymans. John Lyman bought land west of the Coginchaug River in the mid-1700s, and seven generations of his descendants have helped shape the town ever since. Over the centuries the family’s enterprises ranged widely — at one point even manufacturing washing machines — before settling into the business that bears their name today, Lyman Orchards, whose pick-your-own fields, farm store, and golf courses make it a regional destination and a living link to the town’s agricultural roots.
Middlefield’s hills offer more than orchards. Powder Ridge, which opened as a ski area in 1961, brings winter recreation to the town and has been revived in recent years as a four-season mountain park, while Lake Beseck, off Route 147, draws swimmers and anglers in the warmer months. Just to the north, Wadsworth Falls State Park, shared with Middletown along the Coginchaug River, adds trails and a waterfall to the town’s outdoor offerings. For a community of its size, Middlefield is unusually rich in places to play.
The town’s roads are few but steady. Route 147 and Route 157 carry the local traffic through Middlefield’s center and out toward its neighbors, with Route 66 passing nearby to the north. These roads see regular enforcement, and citations are common along the busier stretches and near the recreational draws.
