Middlebury takes its name from its location: when it was incorporated in 1807, its territory was carved from the surrounding towns of Southbury, Waterbury, and Woodbury, leaving it quite literally in the middle of the three. For most of its history it was a quiet agricultural town in the hills west of Waterbury, its farms supplemented by blacksmith shops and, in the nineteenth century, textile mills. As those industries faded, Middlebury turned to dairying and to the raising of saddle horses, holding onto a rural, well-kept character that it has guarded ever since.
The town has long punched above its weight in two respects. One is education: the Westover School, founded in 1909 by Mary Robbins Hillard, has drawn students to Middlebury for more than a century, and its handsome campus was designed by Theodate Pope Riddle, one of the first women to practice architecture in the United States. The other is recreation: Quassy Amusement Park, set on the shore of Lake Quassapaug, grew from a turn-of-the-century trolley resort into a beloved regional amusement and water park, and it is now one of only about a dozen original “trolley parks” still operating anywhere in the country.
Those two institutions, along with the lake and the town’s well-preserved center, give Middlebury its mix of refinement and family fun. It remains a relatively small, affluent suburb on Waterbury’s edge, with a historic green and rolling countryside that belie how close it sits to one of the state’s busier highway corridors.
That highway is where the town’s traffic concentrates. Interstate 84 crosses Middlebury with two interchanges near the Waterbury line, and these ramps — along with the Route 64 corridor and its brief overlap with Route 188 near the town center — bottleneck at peak hours and on busy Quassy weekends.
