Manchester lies just east of Hartford, a town founded in 1672 on land bought from the Mohegan that would become one of the great manufacturing communities of the Connecticut River valley. Its modern history, and its enduring nickname, belong to one family. In 1838 the Cheney brothers founded a silk-manufacturing company in town, and over the following century they built it into the largest producer of silk thread and silk goods in the United States — an achievement so complete that Manchester became known simply as “Silk City.”

The Cheneys built far more than mills. At its height the company employed a quarter of the town’s residents, actively recruited immigrant workers, and surrounded its factories with the housing, churches, and schools of a true company town. That whole world survives as the Cheney Brothers Historic District, a 175-acre landscape of more than 275 buildings — mills, workers’ homes, and Cheney family mansions alike — that was named a National Historic Landmark in 1978. The family even ran its own short railroad, the South Manchester Railroad of 1869, nicknamed “Cheney’s Goat,” the only family-owned railroad in the country at the time. The silk business faded as synthetic fibers rose in the 1920s, but the brick mill complex still stands at the town’s heart.

Manchester reinvented itself in the decades that followed, and today it is one of the major retail centers of the region. The north end of town, around the Shoppes at Buckland Hills mall, has grown into a sprawling shopping district that draws shoppers from across central Connecticut, while the historic Main Street and the old Cheney district anchor the south. It is a populous, busy town that wears both its industrial past and its commercial present.

That activity converges on a dense road network. Interstate 84 runs east and west through Manchester and meets Interstate 384, which begins in town, while Route 83 and Main Street carry heavy local traffic, especially around the Buckland Hills retail district.
