Madison occupies the southeastern corner of New Haven County, a classic Connecticut shoreline town strung along Long Island Sound. It was first settled in 1641 as part of Guilford, and for most of the colonial era it was known as East Guilford, the eastern parish of its older neighbor. Only in 1826 did it incorporate as a town in its own right, taking the name of James Madison, the fourth president, then recently out of office. The result is a town with deep colonial roots and a graceful, well-preserved center.

That center is one of the prettiest on the shoreline: a traditional town green ringed by historic homes and churches, with a compact downtown of locally owned shops, bookstores, and restaurants that has kept its independent character. Madison has long been a town that balances year-round community life with a seasonal identity, and in the warm months its population swells with visitors drawn to the water.

The great draw is Hammonasset Beach State Park, at the town’s eastern edge. With the longest public beach in Connecticut, along with its campground, picnic groves, marsh trails, and fishing pier, Hammonasset is the busiest shoreline park in the state, pulling enormous crowds from across the region on summer weekends. Between the beach, the downtown, and the town’s coves and marshes, Madison sees a steady stream of out-of-town visitors through the warm season.

All of those visitors arrive on the same roads. Interstate 95 runs across the northern part of town, close to the Post Road, U.S. Route 1, which carries the local traffic through the village and out toward Hammonasset, while Route 79 connects north toward Durham. Many of the drivers cited on these roads are beachgoers and travelers unfamiliar with the area, and enforcement is steady, especially in summer.
