Lyme, Connecticut

Lyme is one of the smallest and most rural towns on the lower Connecticut River, occupying the east bank above the river’s mouth in New London County. It traces its origins to 1665, when the portion of the Saybrook Colony east of the river was set off as the plantation of East Saybrook, and to 1667, when the General Court formally recognized it as the town of Lyme, named for the English coastal town of Lyme Regis. The Lyme of today is much smaller than the original: its eastern reaches split off as East Lyme in 1823, and its southern shore became South Lyme β€” soon renamed Old Lyme β€” in the 1850s, leaving the parent town a quiet, inland-and-riverfront community.

What remains is a town that has guarded its rural character with unusual determination. Lyme is known for the beauty of Hamburg Cove, a sheltered inlet off the Connecticut River prized by boaters, and for the woods, fields, and river frontage that surround it. Generations of land conservation have kept much of the town in farmland and forest, and Lyme has one of the highest proportions of preserved open space of any town in the state, threaded by the Eight Mile River and dotted with quiet ponds.

Lyme’s name is, of course, known far beyond Connecticut for another reason. It was here, in the mid-1970s, that physicians first described the cluster of arthritic symptoms that came to be called Lyme disease, eventually traced to the bite of the black-legged tick β€” a piece of medical history that attached this small river town’s name to a condition recognized around the world. Residents tend to take the association in stride, far more attached to the cove, the river, and the rural calm that define daily life here.

Even a town this quiet sees traffic on its roads. Route 156, a designated scenic road, winds north and south through Lyme, and Route 82 crosses toward the Connecticut River and the East Haddam bridge. These roads carry steady seasonal and through traffic, and they see periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the way. A ticket here, as anywhere, can affect a driver’s license, insurance, and record. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
