Litchfield gives its name to the whole northwest county, and it remains the archetype of the New England hill town — a broad green, white-spired churches, and rows of stately Federal houses set along elm-shaded streets. Founded in 1719 by settlers from Hartford and Windsor, it grew through the eighteenth century from a frontier farming outpost into one of the most important commercial and cultural centers in inland Connecticut, a town whose prosperity and prominence in the early republic were remarkable for a place so far from the coast.

Nothing illustrates that prominence better than the Litchfield Law School. Beginning in 1774, Tapping Reeve and his partner James Gould built the first law school in the country here, and over the next sixty years it trained more than a thousand young men who went on to shape the nation — among them two vice presidents, dozens of senators and congressmen, cabinet members, and justices of the United States Supreme Court. The town was also the birthplace of two of the most influential Americans of the nineteenth century, the writer Harriet Beecher Stowe and the preacher Henry Ward Beecher.

That heritage is preserved with unusual care. The Litchfield Historic District was named a National Historic Landmark in 1968 and was the first historic district designated in Connecticut, protecting the green and the streetscape around the junction of Route 202 and Route 63. Beyond the village, the town takes in the borough of Bantam and the vast holdings of the White Memorial Foundation along Bantam Lake — the largest nature preserve in the state — giving Litchfield a combination of architectural grandeur and protected open space that draws visitors throughout the year.

All those visitors travel the same handful of roads. U.S. Route 202 and Route 63 cross at the town green as the main routes through Litchfield, with Route 118 feeding in from the east, and together they carry steady commuter, tourist, and weekend traffic. Enforcement on these roads is regular, and citations are common, particularly when out-of-town drivers fill them on busy weekends.
