Ledyard sits on the east bank of the Thames River in the southeastern corner of Connecticut, a town incorporated in 1836 and named for Colonel William Ledyard, the Revolutionary officer who fell defending Fort Griswold at the Battle of Groton Heights. For most of its history it was a quiet farming community, its fields and woods spreading back from the river, with the village of Gales Ferry along the Thames in the southwest as one of its main settlements. That changed dramatically at the end of the twentieth century.
Ledyard is the home of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, whose reservation occupies the northeastern part of town. In 1992 the tribe opened Foxwoods Resort Casino there, and the complex grew into one of the largest casinos in the world, transforming a rural corner of New London County into a major destination that draws millions of visitors a year. Alongside it, the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center preserves and presents the deep history of the Pequot people, whose roots in this land reach back thousands of years.
The result is a town of striking contrasts. Much of Ledyard remains rural and residential — old farms, forest, and the riverside neighborhoods of Gales Ferry — while the Mashantucket area hums with the activity of a world-class resort. Many residents, meanwhile, commute to the great employers of the region just beyond the town line: the Naval Submarine Base and Electric Boat in neighboring Groton, and Pfizer’s research operations nearby. It is a town that holds both deep history and the modern economy of southeastern Connecticut.
That mix puts a wide range of drivers on Ledyard’s roads. Route 12 runs along the Thames, Routes 117 and 214 cross the town, and Route 2 funnels casino traffic toward Foxwoods. A great many of the drivers on these roads are visitors heading to or from the resort rather than locals, and enforcement is steady.
