Lebanon is a rural town in eastern Connecticut’s New London County, and at its center lies one of the most remarkable spaces in New England: a town green nearly a mile long, among the largest anywhere in the region and, by local account, the only one still regularly worked for agriculture. That green is more than scenery — it is the stage on which Lebanon played a role in the American Revolution far out of proportion to its size, a role that earned the town its nickname, the “Heartbeat of the Revolution.”
The reason was a man: Jonathan Trumbull, who served as governor through the war and was the only sitting colonial governor to side with the Revolution against the Crown. From his War Office facing the green, Trumbull ran Connecticut’s Council of Safety, which met more than a thousand times between 1775 and 1783 to plan strategy and to supply the Continental Army — so central to the war effort that the modest clapboard building has been called the “Pentagon of the Revolution.” Washington, Henry Knox, Lafayette, and Rochambeau all passed through, and over the winter of 1780–81 the Duc de Lauzun’s French cavalry encamped on the Lebanon green before marching south toward the decisive campaign in Virginia.
That history is still standing. The Governor Trumbull House, the Jonathan Trumbull Jr. House, the William Williams House — Williams was a signer of the Declaration of Independence — and the Wadsworth Stable cluster around the green, open to visitors who come to walk the same ground as the founders. Beyond the historic center, Lebanon remains what it has always been: a working agricultural town of farms, fields, and open land, one of the most rural in its part of the state.
The town’s traffic runs on a pair of country routes. Route 87 runs north and south and Route 207 east and west, both passing along or across the great green and connecting Lebanon to Colchester, Willimantic, and Norwich. These open roads see steady through traffic and periodic enforcement, with citations turning up along the faster stretches.
