Killingworth is a quiet inland town in the southern part of Middlesex County, set in the wooded hills just back from the Connecticut shoreline. Europeans established a plantation here in 1663, naming it Homonoscitt for the Hammonasset people who had long lived in the area, and in 1703 the General Assembly granted incorporation under the name Kenilworth — an English place-name that, through generations of local pronunciation, gradually shifted into Killingworth. In its early form the town was far larger than it is today, its lands reaching all the way to Long Island Sound until 1838, when the shoreline portion split off to become the town of Clinton.
What remained was the upland, the North Society, and that is the Killingworth of today: a rural, residential town of forest, ponds, and scattered homes that never industrialized. For most of its history it was a farming community, and even now it retains a distinctly country character, with much of its land in woods and protected open space rather than development.
Chief among those open spaces is Chatfield Hollow State Park, more than four hundred acres of woodland adjoining the larger Cockaponset State Forest. The Civilian Conservation Corps shaped the park during the Depression, building Schreeder Pond behind a horseshoe-shaped stone dam in 1934, and it was formally designated a state park in 1949. Today its trails, swimming pond, and picnic groves make it the recreational heart of the town and a draw for visitors from the surrounding shoreline communities.
For a small town, Killingworth’s roads still carry steady traffic. Route 81 runs north and south through town, the main connection between the shoreline and the river-valley towns to the north, while Route 80 crosses east and west, and the two meet near the town center. Both see regular enforcement, with citations common along the faster stretches. We follow these roads and the equipment used along them, which is generally where the violations described below begin.
