Kent occupies the western edge of Litchfield County, hard against the New York line, with the Housatonic River running straight through the heart of town. It is one of the most scenic of the northwest hill towns, a place where the river valley, the surrounding mountains, and a walkable village center combine to draw visitors from across the region — and increasingly from New York City, for whom Kent has become a favorite country escape. The Indian name for the area is rendered “Scatacook,” and there is long evidence of Native fishing and camping along its waters.

The town’s natural attractions are its calling card. Kent Falls State Park, in the northeastern part of town, centers on Falls Brook, which tumbles roughly seventy feet in a single dramatic cascade — and then through a series of lesser falls — before joining the Housatonic, a sight that fills the park in summer and especially in autumn. On the western side of town, Macedonia Brook State Park, the Appalachian Trail, and the Schaghticoke Indian Reservation occupy the rugged country along the ridges, giving Kent some of the finest hiking and hill scenery in the state.

Downtown Kent has reinvented an old crossroads as an arts destination. Where the iron furnaces and mills of the nineteenth century once stood, the village now mixes shops, restaurants, and a cluster of art galleries that have made Kent a small but serious center for the arts, anchored at the corner of Route 7 and Route 341 by the obelisk of the Civil War Soldiers Monument. The presence of the Kent School, a well-known preparatory school along the river, adds another layer to the town’s life.

All of that activity travels on two roads. Route 7 runs north and south along the Housatonic as the main highway through the valley, and Route 341 crosses east and west through downtown toward the New York line. Because so many of the drivers on these roads are visitors unfamiliar with the area — especially on busy foliage weekends — enforcement is steady, and citations are common.
